Surgery to remove the gallbladder is called cholecystectomy

Some people get loose stools, also called diarrhea, after having this surgery

In most cases, the diarrhea lasts no more than a few weeks to a few months There is no specific gallbladder removal diet that you should follow if you have this problem. The timing of surgery depends on how bad your symptoms are and your overall risk of complications during and after surgery If your surgical risk is low, you might have surgery during your hospital stay

Once your gallbladder is removed, bile flows from your liver into your small intestine, rather than being stored in your gallbladder. The cause of diarrhea after gallbladder removal isn't clear Some experts believe that it results from an increase in bile, especially bile acids, entering the large intestine Bile may act as a laxative

Treatments you and your healthcare team may consider for controlling your diarrhea after cholecystectomy include

Gallstones range in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball Some people develop just one gallstone, while others develop many gallstones at the same time People who experience symptoms from their gallstones usually require gallbladder removal surgery Gallstones that don't cause any signs and symptoms typically don't need treatment.

Bile is a digestive fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder During bile reflux, digestive fluid backs up into the stomach and, in some cases, the esophagus. The size of a gallbladder polyp can help predict whether it's cancerous, called malignant, or noncancerous, known as benign Small gallbladder polyps that are less than 1/2 inch — about 10 millimeters (mm) — in diameter are unlikely to be cancerous and generally don't require treatment.
